This deli (another location I work) is a local favorite - the vibe is authentic, no frills East Coast all the way - expect to herded, scrutinized, perhaps just plain ignored by the proprietor Dan Stein and his ragtag krewe - but leave with a legit deli sandwich and a rare beer or six (Dan's beer vault is one of the best retail selections in the city with over 400 different brews in stock). The Deli's motto is "Lookin' for a po' boy? Go somewhere else."

In a city with a disappointing lack of authentic Mexican cuisine. Casa Borrega is a breath of fresh air. The food is fresh and flavorful, the decor is superb (the owners are artists who specialize in reclaimed architecture and local antiques), and the live music is spicy good. It makes for a hell of a date night!

This place isn't very old, but it has already established itself as one of the best BBQ options in the city. Their brisket and burnt ends are mind-bendingly delicious.

This is an amazing little lunch spot, with strange, fantastical food preparations that just "work." The critical acclaim this place has received in the past year is astounding. Not to be missed if you're looking for something familiar and yet exciting all at once.

Shopping

This is where I used to work - it's a spacious, specialty foods market down Oretha Castle Haley Blvd from my house, located inside a beautifully renovated school building. Their hot food bar is very, very tasty, and there is a full liquor bar inside as well so patrons can sip as they shop. Very New Orleans.

This is my go-to for alcohol and snacks on the go, located just two blocks down St. Charles from Jackson Ave. The fried chicken is better than the chicken at Brother's Food Mart (on the corner of Jackson.), and the prices aren't as gauged for tourists.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Ave. Pub is walking distance down St. Charles and features one of the best beer programs in the city - they take variety very seriously. The kitchen is also exceptional, the upper balcony is a great scene, and the whole operation is open 24/7. Nothing not to love about this place.

Arts & Culture

This space is a great place to see and experience different exhibits centered around the African diaspora here in New Orleans and beyond.

This beautiful venue is part concert hall, part cocktail bar, part event space, and features large-scale jazz performances on a regular basis. The acoustics are remarkable, adapted specifically around jazz improvisation rather than classical symphonic tones.

Getting Around

The streetcar is the quintessential New Orleans public transportation - it may make for a slightly slower ride than the bus lines, but the ride is much more historically relevant (and smooth). $1.25 will take you as far one way as you want to go - either down to Canal Street and the foot of the French Quarter or uptown to Audubon Park. It's a great way to get a feel for the layout of the uptown neighborhoods and view the mansions under the oaks.
