Parks & Nature

Beaches Guests should consider visiting the great beaches in Harris. But beyond Luskentyre and Scarista beachthere are what I call the "secret beaches" of Harris. To get to them, drive south on the A859 to Northton. Along the way you will pass Luskentyre and a string of beaches. Take a right turn into Northton and drive east until you find the beach at the end of the road where you may find parking. You should then walk east along the path that skirts the shore, keeping Capeval (the mountainous Headland), to your right, for approx one mile, until you reach the ruined medieval chapel. Along the way you will see several stunning beaches.

Walks in Gravir After going down the driveway you can choose either to keep to the left or go right. If you go left and up the big hill you will be rewarded by arriving at the village gate and beyond that Loch nam Faoileag ("Loch of the Sea Gulls"). Staying on the road and walking along the shore heading northeast, you will traverse a spectacular moor landscape. After two miles or so you will come to a stone bridge. Just below lies Loch Mirkavat (the "dark" loch) and the entrance to the village of Calbost. Keep going until you reach the crest of the next big hill and you will see more of Calbost and a stunning view of the sea.

Shopping

Ravenspoint is the district shop/museum/petrol station/cafe. It carries newspapers and essential grocery items. The cafe has good coffee, cakes, and sandwiches. The museum is rich with local historical artifacts. And the petrol station is the only one between Campbell's garage and Aird Hasaig.
