Cimos is the place to go for delicious pasta. All of their pasta is handmade: my personal favourite is the Spaghetti Carbonara. The chef recommends not adding parmesan because it's already a cheesy pasta, but I always do because I love cheese! As a vegetarian, I love that they'll make any pasta meat-free as long as the restaurant isn't too busy. Go on a Wednesday to take advantage of pasta night when all pasta is $13.

You can't miss the beautiful stonework that makes up the facade of the Twisted Cork. Located downtown, this restaurant is just as lovely inside as it is outside and the food is delicious! Head there for a casual fine dining experience (they serve lunch and dinner) or a few drinks. Start with the calamari, enjoy the phyllo bundle for dinner, and end with the creme brulee or tiramisu. Want an after dinner sipper? This restaurant offers a bunch of options.

Serving up a wide array of fruit wines and scrumptious eats from its bistro, the Northern Lights Estate Winery is a favourite of locals and tourist alike. This winery is the northernmost winery in British Columbia; as grapes don't grow well in a northern climate, they grow and source local fruit with which to make their wines. Grab a bottle of wine, order some food from the bistro, and enjoy the views along the banks of the Nechako River. They'll re-cork your bottle for you so you don't have to drink all of your wine! Brunch is a must at the winery as the food is amazing. Make sure to watch for special events held inside the winery or at their outdoor amphitheatre across the road.

Nancy O's is known for its delicious food and wide array of entertainment options: from live music to comedy, there's something happening several days a week. Try the curry poutine or chicken and waffles or opt for one of their many burgers. On Sundays, drop by after 10 am to sample a yummy brunch menu. The casoulet skillet is a great option and so are the eggs benedicts. This place is vegetarian and vegan friendly.

Drinks & Nightlife

CrossRoads Brewing is a great place to catch up with friends or make new ones over a beer or two or three. They offer a selection of beer that's brewed in-house along with samples from their friends (other breweries across Northern BC). My personal favourites are the Cloud 9 Witbier, ClearCut Lager and Dark Days Porter. Unlike some craft breweries, this place also boasts a full-service restaurant. And it's kid-friendly! Their main offerings are pizza (try the Fun-Guy if you love mushrooms) and a selection of sandwiches. The gnocchi is amazing too. They offer brunch on Sundays and their outdoor patio is always packed in the summer.

Prince George's newest microbrewery and soon-to-be distillery doesn't disappoint. Located across from a scrap yard in a light industrial area of the city, the chill atmosphere is paired with a selection of tasty beer and snacks. In staying true to their local roots, their beer is named after landmarks in Prince George. Stay tuned for my favourites, because I can't remember any names right now, and their gin and vodka offerings.

You might not think "Hip place to hang out" when you think of the Royal Canadian Legion, but our Legion is definitely the cool place to go for music lovers. The Legion functions as a live music venue on weekends; the best part is it's run by Legion members so there's a great mix of ages at shows. If you're looking for a chill spot to enjoy an affordable drink, listen to great music, and maybe do some dancing, check out this spot.

Parks & Nature

This beautiful park is steeped in history. Located along the banks of the Fraser River, Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park is named after the First Nation on whose unceded traditional territory on which we live. Take a walk along the paved path that follows the river, pack a picnic and relax under one of the many trees, visit the Exploration Place Museum & Science Centre, and then visit The Little Prince Train Station for a ride on the mini-train followed by a delicious scoop or two of ice cream made by local ice cream makers Frozen Paddle. There's also a water park and a playground for the little ones.

Ferguson Lake Nature Reserve is about a 15-minute drive from the city centre and near a residential area, but you feel like you're in a secluded area. The Nature Reserve's circular lakeside trail is suspended on a plank walkway over the lake, which gives visitors a chance to observe plant an aquatic life up close. Have a picnic, do a little fishing, or just go for a walk. No matter which activity you choose, you're guaranteed peace and quiet.

If you're up for a short but somewhat strenuous hike, head to Teapot Mountain. It's located 50 km north of Prince George, so you'll need a car to get here. To get to Teapot Mountain, drive north of Prince George on Highway 97 past Summit Lake. From Highway 97 turn left onto Tallus Road. Continue driving and then take a right onto the Caine Creek Forest Road. Follow the road to the parking lot. As you're hiking up the trail you'll notice teapots left by other hikers. When you get to the top you'll be rewarded with a stunning 360-degree view of surrounding mountains, trees, and wetlands. This is one of my favourite hikes and worth every bit of effort.

The 32-hectare Cottonwood Island Nature Park is a starting point for - or point of interest on - the 11km Heritage River Trail System and connects a number of parks along the Nechako and Fraser Rivers. It runs along the Nechako River to Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park and is a great place to go for an afternoon stroll. When the water is low, you can walk out onto rocky islands. Keep your eyes open for beautiful carvings in the bark of several mature cottownwood trees. The trail is close to downtown so you can reward yourself after your walk by heading to a nearby pub or restaurant.

The man who runs Goodsir Nature Park is a lover of botany who has planted 200 different kinds of trees, shrubs and wildflowers on his large property. Read interpretive signs as you stroll along groomed trails and watch for the beaver pond. Walk through the indoor plant museum and the J.L. Good Vinyl Museum. Call in advance for a guided tour and access to the plant vinyl museums. There are limited tent campsites and one RV campsite available by donation. There is also a small cabin that must be reserved. Please sign the guestbook and leave a donation; this park is one man's 25-year labour of love!

Arts & Culture

If you enjoy art, a visit to the Two Rivers Gallery is a must at only $7 a visit and free admission on Thursdays. After browsing the works in the permanent collection, visit the Rustad Galleria to enjoy works from local and regional artists. More of a hands-on person? Two Rivers Gallery offers a wide array of art classes and experiences. My personal favourite is their wine and art nights (I say art because the class I signed up for paired wine with making effigies, better known as voodoo dolls).

Step into Prince George's past at the Railway and Forestry Museum. Visit this museum to learn how Prince George's existence is tied to the construction of the railway that still runs through the city and forestry through a wide array of indoor and outdoor exhibits. Walk through old rail cars and marvel at the size of old forestry equipment. Hop on the Cottonwood Railway to see the outdoor exhibits from a different perspective and ride through a beehive burner. This ride on the mini-railway is a favourite with young children, but it's fun for adults too!

The Exploration Place is a great museum for families. It features a biome with lots of creepy crawly living creatures, an amazing play space, dinosaur bones, and much more. The best part is it's located right beside Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park, so when your kids get tired of being inside, they can head outside to play on the nearby playground or at the water park in the summer. There are lots of exhibits to keep parents and adults busy too.
