Shopping
The city of Almeria is only 30 minutes drive and has a great central food market, especially the fish section on the lower level. It's just off the Paseo, which is lined with most chain brands from Bershka to Burberry. Good for rainy days (that's about two days a year).

Touristy small town set on fabulous beach in the Cabo de Gata park. Good restaurants, Casa Miguel is the most upmarket. One of the best Italian ice-cream shops on the planet (try the ultra dark chocolate). If you want to buy tourist trinkets, beach gear, etc. San Jose is the place. Lots of bars open at night, music and such. Stay away in August. The whole town closes down in the winter, so narrowish window here.

Entertainment & Activities
The village has some sort of event, parade or party every few months, the highlight being the mid August feria. Easter, Semana Santa, is particularly evocative and picturesque in Tabernas, being extremely traditional. In case you're bored between Easter and August there's the Cruzes de Mayo.

One of the remaining Spaghetti Western sets built by Sergio Leone in the 1960s. When the cavalry rides into town in The Good The Bad & The Ugly, well, this is where they do it. At €22 per head it is pricey just for a peek at a few old buildings, but worth the trip if you're an aficionado, and theres a great shot down the main street with the Sierra Alhamilla brooding in the distance. They do a decent buffet lunch, and a very good gazpacho in the summer. Tell the Sheriff Richard sent you.
