Santa Fe de Antioquia is one of the best preserved colonial cities in Colombia. It is one of the most popular day trips that can be done from Medellín. In addition to the city of Santa Fe de Antioquia, you can also visit the Puente de Occidente, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. Santa Fe was the capital of Antioquia from 1584 to 1826 at which time the capital was transferred to Medellín. The city has preserved its historic center practically intact, making it one of the best examples of the colonial cities of Colombia, along with Barichara, Villa de Leyva, and Cartagena de Indias. The city has retained intact the character and feeling of a town with several hundred years behind it with its narrow and cobbled streets, its white houses with typically colonial carved wooden balconies, small churches, and its central square that serves of social gathering center of the city. Very close to the city is the Puente de Occidente, one of the most interesting engineering works of the 19th century in South America. It is a suspension bridge almost 300 meters long over the Cauca River. The landscapes in the area are really beautiful. If you are interested in visiting this charming town, let us know and we will arrange it for you.

Santa Fe de Antioquia became the first capital of the department of Antioquia all the way back in 1584. Santa Fe can be reached within an hour by bus, and due to its lower elevation, it’s NOTICEABLY WARMER! And as if this list isn’t long enough to keep you busy, there are a dozen or so festivals in Medellín each year, celebrating everything from Christmas lights and flowers to salsa, tango, jazz, and poetry. Backpackers and budget travelers who take advantage of the local transport, eat like a local, and don’t go overboard with their partying can experience the city for as little as $40 a day. Old capital of Antioquia, one hour outside of Medellin. Founded in 1541 by Jorge Robledo as Villa de Santafé on the western bank of the Cauca River, in 1545 it received the coat of arms and the title of City of Antioquia from King Philip II of Spain. It was elevated to the status of parish in 1547 by the bishop of Popayán. It changed its name in 1584 when it became the capital of Antioquia. It was a mining town from its beginnings and the gold mining operation has been the base of its economy. Its cathedral was constructed in 1799 and elevated to the Diocese of Antioquia in 1804 by Pope Pius VII. In 1813 Antioquia was declared a sovereign and independent state with Santa Fe as its capital, a status it maintained until 1826, when Medellín was chosen as the new departmental seat. Due to the state of conservation of its colonial architecture, it was declared a national monument in 1960.
