For cutting-edge modern and contemporary art, don't miss the Hirshhorn. It's a Smithsonian museum located in a stunning, drum-shaped building. After walking the gallery, head downstairs to the gift shop and Barbara Kruger's installation on the Lower Level lobby. Tips: Free 45-minute tours are…

Modern and always changing, this museum isn't always on a top 5 list of the National Mall's exhibits, but is a real cool modern gem. Look for the visiting exhibits for ideas. Come and spend an hour and then move on. No need to spend a whole day.

On the national mall, this free Modern Art museum is one of our favorites. The exhibits are intriguing and offer a respite from the historical focus of much of DC. Plus, there is a great coffee shop in the lobby so it makes for a nice break spot between museums!

“This museum spans two buildings, an East and West Wing, showcasing priceless artworks from Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, John Singleton Copley, Johannes Vermeer, Vincent van Gogh, and Henri Matisse. Tip: Starting May through the end of August, relax in the museum's gorgeous sculpture garden and enjoy performances from the "Jazz in the Garden" series. ”

“The museum is a memorial to the millions of Jews who died during the Nazi regime in Germany during World War II. The exhibits tell the horrific story of genocide and teach the dangers of hatred and prejudice. Visiting this museum is an emotional experience so be sure that you have enough time and stamina. The permanent exhibits are not recommended for children under 11 years old. There is a separate exhibit for ages 8 and up that tells the story of the Holocaust through the eyes of a young boy. ”
