I recommend renting bikes here and heading up Captiva Island to go exploring. You'll be biking right along the Gulf of Mexico...ahh. Be sure to respectfully explore the cemetery at the Chapel By The Sea and visit the quirky Captiva district.

Thursday nights are hermit crab races with a wonderful humorous host. Guests buy their crab and hope to win! Hilarious.

If you are willing to pay the $50 parking fee, this is a great resort to hangout for the day. Awesome pool with hot-tubs, and a tiki bar. Great beach access.
