The elevator was not projected by Gustave Eiffel, as a lot of people believe. It was Raúl Mesnier du Ponsard (maybe a disciple) who projected it. He was French and he may got inspired by cathedrals and Eiffel steel works. Before the earthquake, there was stairs that lead to “Nossa Senhora do Carmo”…
