Long years ago (1863 to be precise), when Sir Vere Henry Levinge then Collector of Madurai, started digging up for the lake, did he have a premonition that it is going to be the star of Kodaikanal? Obviously, it is not for nothing he must have made a complicated star shaped lake. But, that is what it turned out to be. What a star it is!! But in another way, Kodai lake is a great leveler. You find everyone who visits Kodaikanal here. The guy staying in Clarton rubbing shoulders with the guy who has no place to stay. It democratizes sight seeing. Nothing to pay for entry. Nothing to pay for conveyance. It is one of the few place here that can best be seen by walking around. All you need is the mind and mood to enjoy the beholding offering of nature. You have everything around this lake. Breath taking view of the hills, a Saibaba memorial, a Christian missionary enclave, a road side temple, Tibetan shop, activity center, bicycles on hire, horse riding, boating, balloon shooting for kids, a botanical garden in one end, tea shops ( Janyanti’s tea shop near the Clarton lane is my favorite), gift shopping, I might have missed some. Not just humans, you can find wild Bisons from the pine forest roaming around in the mornings. This the only sightseeing spot in Kodaikanal, that you can visit anytime of the day. Mist will not spoil the experience but would enhance the appeal. Many keep it as the last place to visit and come here in the evenings to relax and crowd it. So visit in th,e mornings and have half a day to spend here.
