Tanzanian-Mexican fusion cuisine. Great flavors and great portions, the fully loaded nachos are bomb, but they will knock you out after.

It’s a little bit outside of the peninsula but this is the best Ethiopian restaurant in town with lovely atmosphere and the best injera. Injera is a sour fermented flatbread with a slightly spongy texture, traditionally made of teff flour. I recommend the vegetarian combo.

You can also set sail from The Slipway for cruises, snorkeling, water sports, or cross over for a day or over-night trip to the tiny but beautiful Mbudya and Bongoyo Islands.

Mwenge is one of the popular and bustling markets in Dar es Salaam, located 8 km north west of the Dar es Salaam central business district around the intersection of Bagamoyo Road and Sam Nujoma Road. Mwenge is both an important business hub for Tanzanians and a popular tourist attraction particularly for its large Makonde community market where ebony sculptures and other art and crafts are sold. A great place to learn about and experience a part of Tanzanian culture, and buy some gifts for home.

Kariakoo is Dar es Salaam's biggest and busiest market, and a major contribution to the city's economy (a bit like New York but on steroids, and with shorter buildings, and more stalls). Sprawling over a considerable area, it's hard to believe that this historic center was once a small village. From fresh produce to auto parts, you can find anything in Kariakoo, just keep sharp as you move about.

Sightseeing

Need a little break from city noise and energy? Want to camp, go for a hike, or just reconnect with nature? This all-women-run cultural tourism forest reserve is a little less than an hour away. Pro tip: Lunch is included in most of their tour packages. Ask for a plant-based, local food, lunch option- their cooking skills are immaculate.

Apart from conventional safaris, Afri-roots organizes city tour, bicycle tour, and Dar es Salaam “reality” adventures, which are good way to get to know the city and its history. “– learn about wazaramo, the first neighborhoods of Dar, Dar in the colonial era, the role of the city in liberation struggles of sub Saharan Africa – visit Frelimo and ANC buildings, learn about Malcom X and Che Guvara in Tanzania, what they did here how they helped in the struggle for independence.”

City/town information

Perchance you want to unwind somewhere green outside of Dar es Salaam. Then it is my personal duty as a human that likes nice things to advise you to check out my friends' spot Magoroto Forest Estate, in Muheza, Tanga. Aptly nicknamed 'The Bali of Africa' this sanctuary of a place is lush and green and has lakes and waterfalls and rivers and streams and cabins and tents and forests and spice farms and hiking trails and birds and all the peace and all the tranquility. Thank me later: www.magoroto.com

The Zanzibar archipelago, particularly Unguja island (my mom's hometown), is not a hard sell. If you can squeeze it into your travels, grab an Azam Marine or Zan Fast Ferry or a Plane, go to Unguja, and eat and experience all the things.

Bagamoyo, is a coastal town founded at the end of the 18th century, though it is an extension of a much older Swahili settlement, Kaole. Full of history and only a couple of hours away it’s worth a visit.

Malls

This is a small mall that is a relatively short walking distance from the apartment. It caters to a variety of needs such as (but not limited to) a supermarket, a movie theatre, a decently stocked beauty supply store, indoor and outdoor market stalls, and food vendors (I recommend Burger 53).

This is our biggest mall. Here you’ll find everything from retail therapy and night life, to very serious banks and mobile network offices. Speaking of, if you’re staying in Dar for at least 5 days, stop by the Vodacom office and get a SIM card (you’ll need your Passport or Government ID). It’ll make moving around so much easier.

Clubs/ Night-life

Samaki Samaki translates to fish fish. It’s a quirky outdoor-indoor restaurant-sports bar-nightclub, the brain child of an even more eccentric owner/Spaniard/pirate?. Good food, good vibes, good music. Place usually fills up around midnight.

An oldie but goodie. Elements is one of dar es salaams oldest nightclubs. It is an indoor-outdoor cocktail bar-club situation. Most nights it’s guest/in-house DJs, but sometimes it’s music concerts, performing artists are both from the region and international. No dress code. (Small) Entrance fee required.

For some reason, sometimes, everyone flocks to this place at some point in the night turning it into a hot night spot. If you’re looking for vibes, and somewhere currently trending, then try here.

Supermarket/ grocery store

Whatever groceries you need/want to buy, this decently-sized place is most likely to have it. Most items are imported, but a lot of the fresh produce is from Tanzania. It also has some random electronics, and household items.
