The New Church Museum is South Africa’s first contemporary art museum, opened to the public in 2012. The purpose of the Museum is to make contemporary South African and African art accessible to the public. Piet Viljoen, the founding benefactor, is motivated by art’s ability to facilitate the examination of society’s values and norms, and believes that this has tremendous social benefit. To this end, he has endowed the museum with his art collection of over 400 pieces. The Museum’s program includes exhibitions by invited curators, whose research interests and curatorial sensibilities offer the public an active engagement with the permanent collection and with artworks loaned from other private and public museums and collections, nationally and internationally. The New Church Museum’s ethos is nimble and reflective. Through an engaging program of exhibitions, its collection and publications, it identifies and supports the most significant and challenging art of its time, actively fostering and presenting original scholarship from South African and African artists. Admission is free and all are welcome.
