St. Mary´s Assumption CHURCH - the German church /Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie/ By locals it is either nicknamed the “German Church” or “Parish church” because it used to serve mainly German nobility. Built as a three-nave Romanesque basilica devoted to St. Nicholas, it used to be a part of a Dominican monastery from the first third of the 13th century. After the fire of 1808 it passed through a general reconstruction. While two side towers were erected and the facade was redecorated in classical style, the ground plan could have been preserved. Behind the church can be found the excavated ruins of the Piarist cloister that lie above the mentioned Dominican one.
