Trails can be muddy so bring good shoes. The journey is more impressive than the destination and the trail can get busy. Still a good way to burn off calories.

This is our favorite hike to do in town! It's about 3 miles round trip to the top of the Astoria Column and back. It is a shorter walk if you just decide to go to the giant, old hollowed-out tree and back.

There is a trail leading from the coach up through a greenbelt, under a wooden bridge and two blocks up Irving Avenue to the Cathedral tree & Astoria Column Trailhead. It is a beautiful setting to get away from it all. How can you not enjoy a temperate rain forest?! This is a must for anyone that hasn't had the experience.

Great trail in the woods from Irving to the Astoria Column, or just to the Cathedral tree if you prefer. Steep but doable even with kids in dry weather. NOT recommended during rainy weather as the the path is slippery when wet.

Start your hike from the Irving Avenue Trailhead to the Cathedral Tree. The Sitka spruce tree is over 300 years old and reaches about 8 1/2 feet in diameter and 200 feet in height. It’s a short hike to the tree and the trail continues on to the Astoria Column. Keep hiking along the trail and you will emerge at the top of the hill where the Column stands. The Astoria Column was built as a monument to the city in 1926. Beautiful artwork begins on the base of the Column and traces Astoria’s history. You can climb the 164 steps to the very top for an amazing view of the city, the Pacific Ocean, the Columbia River and the Astoria-Megler Bridge. If hiking is not your thing, you can also drive up to the Column. There is a small parking fee.
