Walk along the JR line from Harajuku to Shibuya. There’s a wire fence that stops people disturbing the embankment, so it teems with a breathtaking variety of wild plants—wild grapes, clematis, and so on. Some plants looks lonely as they wither in the winter light, but underground creatures will turn them into new life. Keep your eyes open when you are traveling around Tokyo. Across the city, other rail embankments like this one are home to colorful glimpses of nature, like Dame’s rocket and glinting Japanese silver grass swaying in the breeze. Looking at them is so soothing.
