Meteora is a cluster of enormous dark sandstone rocks rising out of Kalambaka, near the first Pindos and Chassis. The monasteries of Meteora, built on the tops of some of the rocks, are today the second most important monastic complex in Greece, after Mount Athos. Of the thirty that have historically existed, only six currently operate, which have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1988.

The city of Kalambaka is built at the roots of the rocks of Meteora and on the left bank of the river Pinios. It is known worldwide for the famous monasteries that are built on the tops of the rocks of Meteora with a population flocking from every corner of the earth coming to admire the natural beauty and the unique landscape formed by the rocks. Meteora is one of the most important monuments in the world, protected by UNESCO and designated as a "Preserved and Protected Monument of Humanity". It is the most remarkable - after Mount Athos - monastery center in Greece.

The Meteora – 4 hours from Athens. This is truly one of the wonders of Greece and is my favorite destination in mainland Greece. Monasteries are perched on the top of mountainous rocks. This an amazing and awe-inspiring sight.
