An ancient abbey inhabited by Benedictine monks for centuries. The present church was built in the 12th century but the abbey's origins it is said to have been founded in the 9th century at the time of the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne, who is credited with founding the chapel – known as the Carolingian Chapel. In its pharmacy, visitors can purchase foodstuffs produced in accordance with formulas of medieval monastic herbal lore, including honey, fruit preserves, sweets, herbal teas, cosmetic products manufactured with natural essences and medicinal herbs, olive oil, black grapes, lavender and so forth. Visitors can also purchase Sant'Antimo beer, made to a special abbey recipe.

This is one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in Italy. The setting in a classic Tuscan landscape is beautiful too.

Sant’Antimo - This is a fascinating hermitage, with a medieval cathedral where still today monks sing Gregorian chants (it is not uncommon to have the chance to hear them). About 80 km away: take the same road for Montalcino (above) and just prior to entering the city, turn off to the left and follow indications to Sant’Antimo.
