Originally established as Loyola College in 1904, the institution was chartered as a university in 1912. Named after the Jesuit patron, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, it has the distinction of transmitting the first radio broadcast in the Deep South, when WWL began operation as a laboratory experiment on March 31, 1922.
