The village of Te Wairoa was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Successive archaeological excavations have unearthed areas of the village to provide an insight into the life and times of the people who lived here. Set in a beautiful landscape the walk and the history make this a worthwhile 1/2 day visit.
This is the site where in the late 1800 a village was covered with volcanic ash after the Mt Tarawera eruption. There is a walk down a waterfall that leads to Lake Tarawera landing.
The Buried Village is an amazing place to go to for peace and tranquility. The story of the the Mt Tarawera eruption is fascinating
